'Israel won't leave Philadelphi': Netanyahu nixes key part of U.S.-led Gaza proposal (2024)

Here are the latest updates on day 332 of the war:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a press conference Monday evening, in which he made his case for staying at the Philadelphi route, claiming that it is of strategic and political necessity for Israel and calling it "Hamas' oxygen pipe."

Protesters gathered across Israel to call for a hostage deal, including in front of the Defense Ministry headquarters in Tel Aviv, outside Prime Minister Netanyahu's house in Jerusalem and at main intersections in northern and southern Israel.

U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris met in the White House Situation Room with the U.S. hostage deal negotiation team to discuss the status of a deal proposal to secure the release of the hostages.

■ The police reported that an explosive-rigged car that was neutralized at the entrance to the West Bank settlement of Ateret Monday morning as part of a foiled attack contained dozens of kilograms of explosives.

■ The U.K. government decided to suspend a series of arms shipments to Israel against the background of the war in Gaza and the fear of widespread harm to civilians and a violation of international law, British Foreign Minister David Lammy announced.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz called the U.K. government's decision to suspend the arms shipments a step that "sends a very problematic message to the Hamas terrorist organization and its backers in Iran."

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda expressed skepticism on Monday that the EU will be able to agree on any sanctions to be imposed on Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

■ Thousands attended the funeral at Kibbutz Be'eri of Carmel Gat, whose body was retrieved from Hamas captivity on Sunday. Her brothers, Or and Alon Gat, said, "Carmel would say we will continue to fight for our lives, because no one will do it in our place. So wake up. Wake up from this life and this nightmare."

Rachel Goldberg, the mother of slain American-Israeli hostage Hersh Golberg-Polin, said at his funeral: "You did every single thing pretty right to survive 329 days in what can only be described as hell ... The beautiful six survived together, and the beautiful six died together, and now they will be remembered together forever."

■ "I apologize on behalf of the State of Israel, that we failed to protect you in the terrible disaster of October 7, that we failed to bring you home safely," said President Issac Herzog at the funeral of Hersh Golberg-Polin.

■ Former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley said, in reference to the funeral of Hersh Golberg-Polin: "How many more of these funerals have to happen before Kamala Harris and Joe Biden start playing hardball and put the sanctions back on Iran?"

■ Adi and Yael Alexander, the parents of Israeli-American hostage Edan Alexander, demanded in a New York Timed op-ed that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "uphold our shared Jewish values and prioritize the hostages, whose lives remain in your hands."

■ The Trump campaign said: "Kamala Harris last March warned Israel not to conduct a military operation in Rafah ... Over the weekend, the bodies of six hostages were recovered from Rafah, including American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin."

Mossad chief David Barnea visited Qatar on Monday for the purpose of continuing negotiations for a hostage-release deal.

■ The spokesman for Hamas' armed al-Qassam Brigades, Abu Ubaida, said on Monday the group has issued new instructions to its operatives on handling hostages if Israeli forces approach detention sites, reiterating blame on Israel for the deaths of hostages.

■ According to sources, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attacked the Histadrut labor federation chairman, Arnon Bar-David, at a cabinet meeting, saying the decision to shut down the economy during Monday's general strike amounts to telling "Sinwar – after you murdered six hostages, we support you."

■ The United Auto Workers union, considered among the most powerful unions in America, said in a statement, referencing the general strike on Monday: "The UAW stands in solidarity with the tens of thousands of Israeli workers who withheld their labor today in support of an immediate hostage deal.

■ The Health Ministry's investigation into the conduct of the health system on October 7 lauded medical professionals and hospitals for having "provided treatment to the best of their ability to save as many victims as possible with great professionalism and dedication," while noting the need to improve coordination capabilities and evacuations to hospitals.

■ The Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Sunday extended the detention until Tuesday of David Chai Chasdai, the suspect in the attack on residents of the southern Bedouin city of Rahat.

Thousands of pro-Palestine protesters gathered in Union Square, New York, for a protest event titled "Flood NYC for Gaza," organized by Within Our Lifetime, a controversial pro-Palestinian group known for its provocative actions.
